Incorporating ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) in the process of planning and management of national protected areas (NPAs) in Peru

By ratifying the Paris Agreement, Peru made a commitment to implement its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which has a mitigation and adaptation component. Peru’s NDC adaptation priorities aim to reduce the vulnerability in 5 thematic areas: water, agriculture, forests, fisheries and aquaculture, and health. In that context, working with the Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) approach within the Natural Protected Areas (NPAs) is relevant, because it is directly related with the current NDC process being carried out.

Main tasks

  • Stakeholder engagement: two national workshops with all Protected Area Managers, EbA training and joint consultation on potential concept notes to the GCF
  • International desk review of EbA best practices
  • Elaboration of a conceptual framework on EbA as well as national guidelines on Incorporation of EbA approach to NPA planning processes
  • Testing the guideline in four National Protected Area
  • Capacitate Protected Area Managers on identification and budgeting for EbA measures on their Protected Areas

Main outputs

  • Workshop and training material
  • Conceptual framework
  • Guideline on incorporation of EbA approach to NPA planning
  • Incorporation of Climate Change to Working Document 14
  • Guideline on how to best budget for EbA measures at national level
