Nutrient pollution is a concern for St. Kitts and Nevis who rely on a clean and healthy ocean as a fundamental attraction for millions of tourists to this island federation and to the islands’ local population.  To safeguard that environment, AAE supported TNC, Conservation International and the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis in developing the Building a Blue-Green Economy in St. Kitts and Nevis Project, an important Eastern Caribbean contribution to the Clean and Healthy Ocean Integrated Program funded by the Global Environment Facility and managed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. To develop the project, AAE worked with all stakeholders to develop the project that will make operational the national ocean policy and spatial and marine management plan further supporting the Islands’ commitment to the Eastern Caribbean Ocean Policy.

The project addresses the growing challenge of marine hypoxia and nutrient pollution caused by natural and human causes, such as agriculture and untreated wastewater by strengthening governance, establishing a national monitoring and data platform, supporting advanced policy reforms, mobilizing investment, and engaging the private sector in piloting pollution-reduction technologies and nature-based solutions. Together, these actions will safeguard biodiversity, restore ecosystem functions, and strengthen resilience in St. Kitts and Nevis. The project establishes a self-reinforcing cycle in which healthier ecosystems provide stronger environmental services, enabling further conservation and economic opportunities, thereby laying the foundation for reducing land-based ocean pollution and advancing a resilient, inclusive Blue-Green Economy in St. Kitts and Nevis while contributing to the broader objectives of the CHO-IP at the global scale.  Our thanks to all and best wishes for a successful project.
